Victoria Reyes García (Barcelona, 1971) is a research professor at Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología Ambientales of Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.
PROJECT
Her research focuses on the systems of traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous rural societies, with a view to implementing to preserve biological and cultural diversity.
A total of 2,014 cameras were installed in Loreto, Peru, to study soil ingestion (geophagy) in areas polluted by hydrocarbons. The cameras shot more than 8,000 one-minute recordings over 207 days. A partial analysis of these recordings shows that forest species in the zone ingest water and soil through soils contaminated by oil that can travel through the food chain and threaten the public health of indigenous populations in the area.
The goal of the project is to create a digital platform (in English and Spanish) that allows citizens to participate in the analysis of the behavior of Amazonian fauna in areas contaminated by hydrocarbons by viewing this data.
