BIO
Roberto Cerdá Espadas (Madrid, 1964) is a stage director, artistic director and coordinator, lighting designer, professor of acting and actors’ coach. His main line of research is the creation of stage atmospheres through the theatrical action with the aim of transmitting new sensations, not only through the medium of word and conflict, but also the inner mood of the performers.
PROJECT
This project is focused on theatrical research that aims to find a language of stage action based on the visual narrative of the Brazilian photographer Sebastiâo Salgado (1944) in the context of the poem ‘The Children’s Crusade’ by German author Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). It relates in theatrical format the verses of the poem, which tells the story of a group of children of different nationalities and religions living in a situation of war and looking for a refuge. The landscape the characters pass through in their search corresponds to the present day, reflected in Salgado’s photographs, of thousands of people who have to flee their homes for a variety of reasons to find a place to live. These two aspects are combined in the work of the actors, based on the acting technique created by the Russian master Michael Chekhov (1891-1955), specifically his theory on “atmosphere,” a concept that has revolutionized the art of interpretation and is applied in the world’s leading theatrical research centers.
