BIO
Marta María Varela Rey (La Coruña, 1973) is a researcher at Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER) and Centro de Investigación Cooperativa en Biociencias CIC bioGUNE.
Her career has focused on the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of hepatic fibrosis, in other words the accumulation of cycatrizing tissue as a result of liver inflammation and the death of hepatic cells, which occurs in great numbers in chronic liver diseases.
PROJECT
Her project aims to identify new predictors in the progression of hepatic fibrosis at genome scale, and recognize new therapeutic targets to reverse their development.
It will use a unique research strategy that will combine two new elements: epigenomic maps and super-enhancers (regions of DNA that play an important role in cellular identity).
