BIO
María del Mar Viana Rodríguez (Barcelona, 1977) is the head scientist at the Spanish National Research Center at Instituto de Diagnóstico Ambiental y Estudios del Agua (Barcelona).
PROJECT
Her project has been called ‘comprehensive’ by the jury, in the way it combines data collection with dissemination and raising awareness.
Viana proposes studying atmospheric pollution by involving schools and students in Barcelona. Sensors are installed in schools that are able to contribute useful measurements at a lower cost than conventional instrumentation.
The data will be available for the whole public for multiple purposes: for school science and technology projects, for assessing the efficiency of corrective measures and for the scientific study of atmospheric pollution.
