BIO
Hannes Mueller (Cologne, Germany, 1978) has a doctorate in Economics from the London School of Economics. Since 2008 he has been working as a researcher in Instituto de Análisis Económico-CSIC in Barcelona, first as a Juan de la Cierva researcher and since 2012 as Ramón Cajal researcher.
PROJECT
His project consists of creating a system capable of predicting the outbreak of civil wars and armed conflicts a year before they occur. This is done by using a machine learning algorithm capable of summarizing large volumes of text and classifying it into subjects such as ‘sports’ ‘the economy’ and ‘civil war’ without human supervision.
For six months, the method will analyze around 3 million journalistic articles on countries that are the object of the study. It will present its conclusions in a workshop in which it aims to ‘get a commitment from the public sector and improve communication between politicians and the academic world.’
