BIO
Álvaro Aytés Meneses (Barcelona, 1977) is the principal researcher at Instituto Catalán de Oncología.
He began his current line of work on prostate cancer at Universidad de Colombia in 2009.
PROJECT
His project will study the molecular mechanisms responsible for prostate cancer that is resistant to therapy, and explore strategies to combat it.
Therapeutic resistance is the main cause of mortality in cancer and of pharmaceutical expense in cancer treatment, so research into it is key for increasing survival and optimizing management of resources in the public health services.
In particular, in prostate cancer, survival rates at 5 years fall from 100% in tumors at an early stage to 25% in patients with a castrate-resistant metastasic disease.
